Wedderburn Castle

When we established our wedding videography business I approached the owners of this house about producing a wedding film there. I founded the couple who own the castle both lovely and keen to help. So, while we never actually had the honour of filming there we are very pleased that we’ll be producing a Butterfly wedding video at Wedderburn this year. Built in 1770 to a design by James Adam – whom is now generally recognised as Scotland’s greatest architect (and whose name incidentally features an awful lot in this list) . In the castle itself the light, spacious ballroom is a fitting place to hold your wedding ceremony, while more intimate parties might choose the elegant stair hall or the drawing-room for the ceremony. The ballroom’s marbled columns, elegant Georgian windows and twin crystal chandeliers, make it the perfect setting for wedding ceremonies, concerts, live music and dancing. The elegance and grandeur of the exterior is matched by Wedderburn’s reception rooms, which retain the warm and welcoming ambience of a private family home. The geometric stone staircase is one of the most striking features in the castle and is often used to great effect by the photographer and videographer.

Abbotsford House

Located on the banks of the River Tweed Abbotsford sits at the heart of the landscape that inspired the poetry and novels of its creator, Sir Walter Scott. Built circa 1822 it is unlike the homes of other great writers, this is a house that the writer himself designed and as such uniquely embodies a physical representation of the Romantic Movement that he helped to create. The house has been described as ‘antiquarian rather than artistic’ – harking back to a mythical golden age that Scott himself created in his fiction. Sitting amid formal gardens and a wider landscape that Scott designed and planted the house can certainly lay claim to being a romantic and very unique venue for that special day. Available for weddings all year round, both indoor and out couples can select from Sir Walter Scott’s Library, the small but perfectly formed Chapel or the breathtaking gardens.

Couples can hire the grounds for marquee use, the state dinning room or the magnificent ball room which can accommodate up to 180 people for a reception. Set against the spectacular backdrop of the River Tweed and the Cheviot Hills, the castle is a very exclusive wedding venue and only caters for about three weddings a year.

Dating back to 1107, Traquair was originally a hunting lodge for the kings and queens of Scotland and now stands as the oldest continuously inhabited house in Scotland. Later a refuge for Catholic priests in times of terror the Stuarts of Traquair supported Mary Queen of Scots and the Jacobite cause without counting the cost. Today, Traquair is one of Scotland’s most romantic castles and a perfect venue for your wedding if you are looking for a unique setting for your wedding in an authentic castle steeped in history for the most important day of your life. Jedburgh Abbey

Jedburgh Abbey is one of the four great abbeys built in Scotland’s border country during the Middle Ages. Established as a priory of Augustinian canons around 1138. Despite the ravages of war and weather, the abbey remains as impressive today, almost 900 years later. Although the abbey cloister is now mostly stone foundations, the great abbey church of St Mary the Virgin stands almost entire. The eastern end has Romanesque architecture of the highest quality. Its solid cylindrical pillars stand in contrast to the more delicate Gothic nave, with its graceful sweep of arcades and magnificent west front. This is really only a suitable venue for a photoshoot, however if you are looking for venue to tie the knot in try Dryburgh Abbey just 20m minutes away.

The history of Thirlestane dates back to at least the 13th century, when a large Border fort was built on the site to defend the approach to Edinburgh from the south.
